The Journey of MODERNA: From Concept to Reality
The purpose of this post was to present the complete process behind the creation of a product — from the initial idea and concept, through form development, 3D modeling, material selection and realization, to a final product ready for use. Through MODERNA, the project explores the balance between visual weight and lightness, demonstrating how a simple idea can be transformed into a functional and aesthetic object. This blog is intended for designers, students, manufacturers, potential clients, and anyone interested in the process of industrial and furniture design.
Opposites
Heavy and light. Wood and leaf. Stone and feather. Stability and movement. Presence and transparency.
At first glance, these opposites may seem incompatible. However, it is precisely within their contrast that one of the most fascinating characteristics of design lies — the ability to create balance between two seemingly opposing states.
This idea became the starting point for the creation of MODERNA.
Not as a form. Not as a table. But as an exploration of the balance between visual weight and lightness.
The goal was to create an object that would feel stable and present, yet also light, open and unobtrusive. An object that would not only serve as a functional element within a space, but also as a sculptural composition that communicates through its form, materials and the negative space surrounding it.
From that initial idea began the journey of MODERNA — and now, let's take a closer look at this process, starting with form development and material selection.
Form Development and Material Selection
After defining the core concept, the process continued through a series of sketches and visual explorations aimed at finding the form that would best convey the idea behind MODERNA.
The initial sketches focused on exploring the relationship between solid and light elements, as well as their balance within space. Through the gradual simplification and transformation of forms, the design began to develop a clearer character and a recognizable visual identity.
Alongside the development of the form, the material selection process also took place. Walnut wood was chosen for the base, a material known for its natural warmth, rich texture and timeless character. Its solid presence brings a sense of stability and strength, while the unique grain patterns give individuality to each piece.
For the top surface, tempered glass was selected, introducing transparency and visual lightness into the composition. Its role is not only functional but also visual — to create a sense of openness and establish a contrast with the solid wooden elements.
To provide additional structural stability, a metal flange was integrated into the design to connect the elements. Besides serving as an important construction detail, it also contributes to the precision and clean appearance of the overall product.
Through the combination of walnut wood, tempered glass and metal details, the concept gradually took on a physical form, transforming from a sketch and digital model into a real product ready for production.
From Concept to Reality
With the form defined and the materials selected, the project entered its most important phase — the transition from an idea to a real product.
Transforming MODERNA from a concept into a physical object required careful preparation, coordination with manufacturers, and the resolution of various construction details. Although the overall form remained faithful to the original design vision, several adjustments were made throughout the production process to achieve the required stability and functionality.
One of the key structural elements was a metal connector used to further reinforce and secure the components. Its role was to provide safety and stability to the construction while preserving the clean and minimalist appearance of the product.
Throughout the production process, multiple checks and adjustments were made to ensure that all elements fit together precisely and functioned as a unified whole. Particular attention was given to the details, finishing, and overall quality of craftsmanship.
The result is MODERNA — a product that successfully preserved the character of the original idea, transforming from a sketch and digital model into a fully realized object ready for everyday use.
Final Product
After the completion of the production process, MODERNA finally reached its final form. What began as an idea, a sketch, and a digital model gradually transformed into a real product ready for everyday use.
The final version remained faithful to the original concept and the idea of balance between visual weight and lightness. The combination of natural materials, clean geometry, and carefully developed details resulted in a product that functions not only as a coffee table, but also as a sculptural element within a space.
Every stage of the process, from the initial sketch to the final realization, contributed to the creation of a product that successfully combines aesthetics, functionality, and structural stability into a unified whole.
The greatest confirmation of a successful realization came after the product was delivered. The table became part of a real interior, where it found its true function and purpose. The positive feedback and satisfaction with the final result served as additional confirmation that the original idea had been successfully transformed into a product with real value.
Today, MODERNA is available for custom production. The product can be adapted to meet the client's specific needs, with options for customizing dimensions, materials, and finishes. Each piece is crafted with careful attention to detail, while preserving the original character and design vision of the project.
