I V N I Chair - Design That Doesn’t Let You Relax

This blog post is intended for enthusiasts of contemporary and conceptual design, as well as young designers and creatives interested in exploring new approaches to form and function. Its goal is to demonstrate that design does not have to be only about comfort, but can also influence behavior, awareness, and the way we experience space, while at the same time presenting a personal design expression and the thinking behind a concept. 

Softness that introduces control

In contemporary design, comfort is often considered the highest value. Most chairs are created to allow complete relaxation and passivity. With this concept, I wanted to challenge that very approach.

A concept that raises questions:
How can form influence behavior?
Should design only provide comfort — or can it also introduce discipline?
And what does it mean for an object to have character?

For me, this is not just design, but a presence in space — quiet, elegant, yet clear and controlled at the same time.

Form and Inspiration — Marine Aesthetics and Fluidity

As a continuation of this line of thinking, the form developed as a response to the idea of control and presence.
The inspiration comes from the marine world — from its quiet dynamics, fluidity, and natural elegance.

The form follows this logic: it appears light, delicate, and almost invisible, while at the same time carrying an inner strength and stability. This contrast between softness and control becomes essential to the design.

The upper part is developed as an organic, fluid form that creates a sense of movement and lightness, while the lower structure introduces clarity and stability.

In this way, the design establishes a balance between the natural and the structural, the soft and the solid.

Materials — A Balance Between Illusion and Function

The choice of materials plays an important role in the final expression of the design. The initial idea included glass and metal, aiming to achieve maximum transparency and contrast.

However, due to the fragility of glass, it was replaced with transparent plastic. This change allowed the visual lightness to be preserved, while increasing durability and practicality.

The metal remains as a structural element that provides stability and emphasizes the strength of the form. The combination of these materials creates a balance between aesthetics and functionality.

Awareness Instead of Relaxation

The way it is used was just as important as the form itself.
Although the form partially envelops the body, it is not designed to allow traditional leaning and relaxation.

Instead, it guides the position of the body and encourages it to remain active and upright.

I do not see this as a chair you can “sink into.” Instead, it encourages you to sit upright, engage your body, and become aware of your posture.

It does not force you — but it guides you.
And that is where the difference lies: it does not take control away from you, but reminds you that you have it.

Form That Sets Rules

The IVNI chair is not designed to blend into a space, but to leave an impression. It represents a balance between softness and strength, form and function, freedom and control.

In a world where design often focuses on ease and comfort, this chair offers a different perspective — a design that encourages awareness, discipline, and presence.

In the end, IVNI is not just a chair. It is an attitude.
