THE NEW ERA OF THE MODERN HOME: ONE PRODUCT, MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS
In this blog post, I will explore the importance of multifunctional design as a contemporary response to today’s dynamic lifestyle and the limited space in modern homes. Through global examples and my own design concepts, I want to show how a single product can offer multiple functions, greater value, and increased flexibility in everyday use.
This text is intended for lovers of contemporary design, for those interested in smart interior solutions, as well as for young designers and creatives who want to explore new directions in product design. At the same time, this post serves as inspiration for anyone who believes that the future belongs to objects that combine functionality, aesthetics, and innovation into one.
Multifunctional Design
In today’s world, where space is becoming increasingly limited and life is moving faster than ever, I see design taking on a completely new role. For me, it is no longer only a question of form or aesthetics — but a matter of smart solutions that truly improve everyday life.
That is why I consider multifunctional design to be one of the most important directions in contemporary product design. Objects today are not created for just a single purpose, but to offer multiple functions within one clean, minimal, and sculptural solution.
Now, I would like to explore a few such examples that inspire me, along with some of my own concepts that follow this philosophy:
Slideaway Sofa Bed
One of the most актуелни examples of multifunctional design today that truly caught my attention is the Slideaway Sofa Bed, winner of the Red Dot Award for Product Design 2024.
I find it especially interesting how this contemporary product is designed to transform effortlessly from a comfortable sofa into a daybed or a full double bed, making it a perfect solution for modern living in compact spaces.
Thanks to its innovative construction and sliding mechanism, the object offers a high level of comfort in every function, without compromising aesthetics. Beyond its functionality, I also appreciate its sustainable approach — using recycled foam and long-lasting materials, showing how multifunctional design can be practical, modern, and environmentally responsible at the same time.
SYMFONISK Speaker Lamp
A contemporary and globally recognized example of multifunctional design that truly inspires me is the SYMFONISK Speaker Lamp, created through a collaboration between IKEA and Sonos. I find it especially interesting how this product combines two everyday functions into one clean and elegant object — serving both as an ambient lamp and as a Bluetooth/wireless speaker.
Instead of light and sound existing separately, they are integrated into a single form that simplifies the space and adds a modern character to the interior. Through examples like this, I see that multifunctional design today is not only about saving space, but about creating smart, aesthetic, and technologically integrated objects that perfectly fit into the modern way of living.
LINII
LINII is one of my multifunctional design concepts where I wanted to explore how a single object can take on multiple roles without losing its aesthetic purity. I designed it as a vase, but also as a practical holder that can be used for jewelry, cups, or fruit, depending on the user’s needs.
For me, LINII is not only a functional product, but also a sculptural piece that brings character into a space. Through this design, I wanted to show that multifunctionality can be elegant, contemporary, and flexible — creating an object that adapts to everyday life and different scenarios within the home.
5 IN 1 is one of my most practical multifunctional concepts, created with the idea that a single object can offer maximum value within a minimal form. I designed it as a transformative piece of furniture that can function as a table, bench, lamp, coat hanger, and shelf — all within one clean and contemporary structure.
For me, this design represents a response to modern living, where space is often limited and the need for flexible, smart solutions is constantly growing. With 5 IN 1, I wanted to show that multifunctionality does not have to be complicated — it can be elegant, adaptable, and visually minimalistic, creating an object that changes according to the user’s needs and becomes part of a dynamic everyday lifestyle.
MORE IN ONE
For me, multifunctional design is not just a trend, but a natural response to the modern way of living. Today, as space and needs are constantly changing, I believe products should be more than static objects — they should adapt and offer multiple roles in everyday life.
Examples such as the SYMFONISK Speaker Lamp or the Slideaway Sofa Bed show that multifunctionality has already become a global direction in design. This philosophy strongly inspires my own work as well, through concepts like LINII and 5 IN 1, where I create objects that are functional, sculptural, and flexible.
